Let’s start by opening the Basic Chart and reviewing some of the features.
To open the Basic Chart:
1 Click on Basic Chart (sample) in the My Charts tab. The Basic Chart opens, showing 3 levels of organizational hierarchy. The down arrows visible below some of the boxes indicate subordinate positions, which we’ll examine later.
The other features in the Chart window include:
The
menu bar that appears on top contains numerous commands that let
you create, edit, format, publish, and work with your charts.
The
Zoom toolbar lets you to zoom in and out on the chart to view selected
box information in detail or the entire chart hierarchy. You can display
chart details and hierarchical information in a variety of ways, as you’ll
learn in this guide.
The
Levels selector, which is set to 3 levels by default, enables you
to choose how many organization levels you want to view at a time. If
you have a large chart, you may want to restrict the viewable levels to
2 or 3, and then expand selected areas (and subgroups), as necessary.
We’ll talk more about that below.
The
Box toolbar lets you select individual or a group of boxes in the
chart, undo and redo changes to boxes, and insert boxes with different
relationships into the chart. For example, the icon lets you add a subordinate to existing
box in the chart. Click each tool in the toolbar displays a popup tooltip
that explains what type of box you can add, or what action you are taking.
2 Click on the Levels selector or Zoom bar to explore different views of this chart. If you get lost, click the middle Zoom position and select Level 3 to return to the default view.
